Back in the day of the early 747s and 708s, Anchorage was a primary stop-over point and flights going and coming from the US to Asia. It is still a major intermodal stop for freight carriers and one of the largest aviation hubs for connections in to Alaska. If you have some time to spend on your stop to Anchorage or it is your destination and you love planes, right around the corner is Lake Hood, the most active float plane airport in the world. You can catch a quick cab ride over to the Lakefront Lodge for a quick bite in their restaurant and then take a stroll around the Lake Hood Seaplane Base.
