Considered a “bucket list” bird for many, the boreal owl is one of the smaller and elusive owls in Sax Zim Bog. We drove around in the area where people indicated they saw the owl last weekend. People who live in the bog put out feeders for the smaller birds that hang around year-around. The cold weather and deep snow can make it harder for birds to find food, and dwindling habitat has taken a toll on these non-migratory birds. So why does the owl come back to this spot? My friend Moose Peterson calls these smaller birds M&Ms for the owls. If you find a restaurant you like, wouldn’t you come back? This shot with the great light that we wanted in the morning was taken with the Nikon D5 and super-sharp Nikkor 180-400. You can get yours at Bedford Camera. Steve has been a great help.
