First Day at Sax Zim

First Day at Sax Zim

Barred Owl

I have had the great opportunity to visit many of the “bucket list” wildlife photography spots around the world. One in particular on my bucket list that gets you up close in personal with some great birds in a winter habitat is Sax Sim Bog in Northern Minnesota. being from Florida, I don’t know why anyone would want to be in sub zero temps during the year but these birds seem to love it. You basically drive down rural roads looking for wildlife that provide a great photograph. The locals love the visitors and set out feeders to keep the birds happy during the deep snow winters.

On our first day int he morning, we stopped by one of the feeders and in the tree right above the feeders was a barred owl that didn’t seem to give a care of all the photographers that were happily snapping away. He was very agreeable and gave me the opportunity to find the gesture I was looking for.

Taken with the Nikon D5 and Nikkor 180-400mm, I was able to isolate as much of the subject that I wanted with the flexibility of a super sharp zoom lens.
